Adhesive Selection for Bonding Glass to Stainless Steel

Bonding glass and stainless steel poses notable challenges: these two materials have vastly different coefficients of thermal expansion. Rigid adhesive layers cannot buffer thermal expansion and contraction, which easily generates internal stress and leads to glass cracking or bond delamination. Therefore, brittle, rigid adhesives should be avoided during material selection. Below, Hoobond offers targeted adhesive recommendations for different working conditions.

UV-Curable Adhesive – Clear Appearance, Small Industrial Component Production Lines

Applications: Bonding tempered glass / clear glass with stainless steel hardware; glass tea tables, lighting fixtures, display components. The bonding zone allows light transmission through glass so UV light can reach the adhesive layer.

Advantages: Crystal-clear invisible bond; cures within seconds under LED UV lamps for high production efficiency; high bonding strength; toughened grades are available to relieve thermal stress.

Notes: UV curing equipment is mandatory; not suitable for large-area lap bonding.

Two-Part Polyurethane (PU) Structural Adhesive – Long-Term Service, Vibration, Outdoor Exposure & Load-Bearing Scenarios

Applications: Outdoor equipment, sanitary glass, assemblies subject to vibration and alternating hot-cold cycles, large-area structural bonding; heavy-duty tempered glass assemblies.

Advantages: Highly elastic adhesive layer accommodates differential deformation between glass and stainless steel, minimizing the risk of thermally induced glass cracking. It delivers excellent water resistance, weatherability and impact resistance, and maintains stable performance in humid environments.

Notes: Full cure takes 24 hours at ambient temperature; fixtures are required to maintain pressure during curing.

Modified Silane (MS) Polymer Adhesive – Interior Decoration, Integrated Waterproof Bonding & Light-Duty Assembly

Applications: Shower enclosure glass, glass guardrails; dual function of bonding and waterproof sealing; not designed for heavy loads.

Advantages: Single-component, solvent-free, outstanding elasticity and weather resistance; non-corrosive to stainless steel; easy application directly via caulking gun.

Notes: Moderate structural shear strength; not applicable for load-bearing structural parts.

Toughened Two-Part Epoxy AB Adhesive – Static Indoor Use, No Vibration, Mild Temperature Variations

Applications: Indoor artware, static small components without repeated temperature cycling.

Toughened Instant Adhesive – Tiny Area Spot Bonding & Repair

Applications: Temporary fixation at micro contact points (<3 cm²), minor repairs on craft articles.

Notes: Average water and temperature resistance; forms thin bond lines. Not recommended for large-area joints or vibrating working conditions.
