How to Solve Brittleness and Cracking of Instant Adhesives

Instant adhesives (cyanoacrylate adhesives) are popular for fast curing and convenient use, but cured glue layers often suffer from brittleness, cracking and peeling, especially under bending, vibration and temperature changes. This problem plagues many industrial users. Reasonable operation, product selection and post-use maintenance can effectively improve this defect.

First, select modified toughened instant adhesives fundamentally. Ordinary standard instant adhesives have high hardness after curing but poor flexibility, so they crack easily when stressed. At present, mainstream manufacturers launch rubber-toughened, elastic-modified instant adhesives. By adding elastic components, the cured glue layer gains proper toughness, disperses external stress, and greatly reduces brittleness and cracking. For elastic materials such as rubber and soft plastic, toughened instant glue is the first choice.

Second, standardize gluing operation and control glue dosage. Excessively thick glue layer is a major cause of brittleness. Thick cured glue has large internal stress, which will crack once slightly squeezed or bent. The correct method is to apply a thin and even glue layer. For large gaps, do not fill with instant glue alone; use matching gap filler first, then apply a thin layer of instant adhesive for bonding. Meanwhile, avoid repeated gluing on the same position, as overlapping glue layers will accumulate stress.

Third, do a good job in surface treatment of bonded materials. If the surface has oil, wax, dust and release agent, the glue cannot fully infiltrate the substrate. The bonding interface becomes unstable, and cracks appear along the gap after curing. Before construction, use professional degreaser to clean the surface. For smooth materials, slight sanding can increase surface roughness, enhance adhesion and relieve local stress concentration.

Fourth, avoid extreme working environments. Cured instant adhesives have poor resistance to sharp temperature changes. Long-term exposure to high temperature, low temperature or alternating cold and heat will make the glue layer gradually brittle and crack. If the product needs to work in extreme temperature environments, add heat-resistant protective coating or choose high-low temperature resistant modified instant adhesives. In addition, avoid long-term strong impact on bonded parts.

Fifth, use matched auxiliary accelerators reasonably. In some cases, users add excessive curing accelerators to speed up curing. Too much accelerator will change the internal structure of the glue, leading to increased brittleness. Use accelerators in strict accordance with product instructions, and control the dosage.

In short, solving instant adhesive brittleness and cracking starts with selecting suitable products, standardizing construction steps, optimizing surface treatment and adapting to working environments. Comprehensive control in every link can maximize the performance of instant adhesives and extend bonding service life.
